Yokohama – Official Suppliers Of Motorsport Tyres To The World’s Best Events

Posted in Motorsport on 17th April 2018

If you participate in motorsport and are on the lookout for a new set of reliable motorsport tyres that offer an enhanced racing experience, choose Yokohama. Used in a variety of events, the long-established Japanese brand is recognised around the world for its ability to create innovative, sturdy products that offer great value regardless if you're racing on the track, or need a new set for your everyday runner.

Their pioneering approach to creating their products is exactly why we, as a family-owned motor business, have established Yokohama Tyres Direct. Being involved within the motorsport industry ourselves at local and national level, we have seen the qualities of Yokohama for ourselves – and with them, you will likely experience a heightened racing experience. After all, they are the world's premier touring car tyre…

Same Motorsport Tyres, New Regulations

The industry-leading reputation of Yokohama has been underlined by their use in the FIA World Touring Car Cup, which is new for 2018. Previously known as The World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) – which Yokohama also supplied – an agreement was reached last year for the FIA WTCC to adopt Touring Car TCR technical regulations to become the FIA WTCR.

The TCR regulations were first introduced in 2014 and have since been adopted by many different racing series' throughout the world. The motorsport tyres remain the same but TCR cars are based on 4 or 5-door production vehicles and must be powered by 2.0 litre turbocharged engines with a capacity between 1750-2000cc and a maximum power output of 350bhp. Whilst the layout of the body and the suspension of a production vehicle is kept in the design of a TCR car (as well as the gearbox), customisations may be made to counteract the stresses of the racetrack, including an upgrade on breaks and aerodynamics. Cars that are used in competition are subjected to Balance of Performance adjustments (BoP) in order to ensure close racing between different makes of vehicles.

According to the FIA, there have been more than 600 TCR cars built and sold to motorsport teams. Some of the car manufacturers that have (or are in the process of) adopting the TCR regulations include, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, KIA, LADA, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, SEAT, Subaru and Volkswagen.

2018 FIA World Touring Car Cup

Motorsport tyres of the 2018 FIA WTCR first went off the grid in April, in the FIA Race of Morocco. Held in Marrakesh, the opening race was particularly noticeable for its use of a street track, which is always a spectacle for the racing fan – and a difficult challenge for the driver. Currently, the championship is experiencing an extended break after July's Race of Slovakia, with a double-header of events coming up in late-September and early-October, in China.

The championship will move on to Japan in late-October, with the tenth (and final) event of the inaugural WTCR taking place in Macau in November. BRC Racing's GabieleTarquini (a race winner in Slovakia) currently has a slender 3-point advantage over four-time WTCC champion (and owner of his own team, no less), Yvan Muller. Both drivers are some way in front of the field as it seems that the Championship is set to provide a duopoly as it reaches its climax. You can check out the last few races of the season on Eurosport.
